The North Carolina Tar Heels have put up a 6-6 campaign under sixth-year head coach Mack Brown this season. The program then fired Brown after their Week 14 loss to NC State, opening speculations about who could join the Tar Heels as a replacement.

After several days of rumors and speculations, UNC finalized Mack Brown's replacement. Six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick will take over the Tar Heels next season. This will be his first job as a college football coach after years of dominating the NFL.

UNC shared a post on social media introducing Bill Belichick as the program's next head coach. The former New England Patriots head coach was greeted with a thunderous round of applause at Dean E. Smith Center.

He then expressed his gratitude and excitement about beginning his journey as a CFB head coach with the Tar Heels. Belichick also introduced the team's first recruit under his command, four-star QB commit Bryce Baker.

"What a thrill it is to be here," Belichick said. "We are here to, can't wait to start it on the football program. Already got it rolling here a few days and can't wait to represent the school and university out there... we're gonna workd hard, we're gonna play hard and looking forward to winning."

Fans took to social media to express their excitement about Belichick's hiring. One fan said that it was wonderful to see the head coach wearing UNC's colors:

"Surreal seeing the GOAT in Carolina Blue. Pinch me guys."

Another fan said UNC's football program is going to have a change in fortune after Bill Belichick's hiring:

"Better than Belichick every chance you get. No one cared about North Carolina Football until the hiring of Bill."

Another fan felt that the Tar Heels are going to enjoy a lot of success in the future after this coaching change:

"Undefeated season coming."

One fan wished Belichick the best of luck for his new journey in college football:

"Good luck to Bill."

This fan is still doubtful that hiring Belichick will guarantee success for the Tar Heels:

"Ain't. no. way. this. works."

One fan was in disbelief about the hiring:

"It's crazy how life plays out! Wishing the new coach much success. Go Heels!"

Belichick took over the Patriots back in 2000 and left after the 2023 season. He then focused on exploring the world of broadcasting and worked as an analyst of the game throughout the current season.

Bill Belichick reveals unfiltered emotions about being a college football coach

For Belichick, the upcoming season with the North Carolina Tar Heels is going to feel different than the experience he has had in the NFL. Despite this, he is excited to begin a new chapter in his coaching journey at the collegiate level.

While speaking to the press on Thursday, Belichick said that working as a head coach at the collegiate level was one of his top dreams.

"Had some good years in the NFL, so that was okay," Belichick said. "But this is a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad coaching at the Naval Academy for 50 years. As a kid, all I knew was college football."

Belichick's stay at Chapel Hill looks promising so far. It will be interesting to see if he can help the Tar Heels achieve the same level of success as he did with the Patriots in the NFL.
