Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter is three days removed from knowing his Heisman Trophy fate after being named among the four finalists for the prestigious accolade. Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward are the other three in contention. Hunter is the favorite for the much-coveted award (-10000 odds on FanDuel).
Four days before the ceremony in New York, on the "Pivot" podcast, the $5.2 million NIL-valued Hunter (as per On3) reminisced about his time as a player for Coach Prime over two stints at Jackson State and Colorado.
The Heisman-contending star who is close to all of Coach Prime's sons revealed which one he speaks to the most.
"It's definitely all four of us you know Bucky (Deion Sanders Jr.), I talk to Bucky the most," Hunter said. "I probably talk to him and Shilo the most but during football and everything on the field I talk to Shedeur more than everybody. Bucky is just like a big brother, he helps me out and I help him out. Like I said, I'm an old soul so I try to help him out as much as I can just as much as they help me out.
"I mean, we have that bond, nobody can break us apart. When we around each other, nothing but goofballs. We always laugh, we always talking smack but they definitely took me in, inside their bond and brought me in as a brother."
Travis Hunter was drawn to the Sanders family atmosphere
In the 2021 recruiting class, Travis Hunter was a highly sought-after five-star prospect, according to 247Sports. He initially committed to the Florida State Seminoles in 2020 but was later convinced by coach Deion Sanders to leave the Seminoles in the FBS to join the Jackson State Tigers in the FCS.
During an appearance on the "Richard Sherman" podcast on October 8, the Heisman-contending star revealed how the coach's family-friendly atmosphere drew him and his mother, Ferrante Harris to Coach Prime's team.
“My family felt comfortable first before he (Sanders) even made me feel comfortable," Hunter said. "So my mom was just like, yeah, I think this is the best deal for us to go learn for somebody that actually did it, even though my mom don't watch football, she know who Coach Prime is.
"So it was kind of crazy just how he kept his family around, like having Shedeur as his quarterback Shiloh standing around, his oldest son Bucky standing around, his daughters are standing around. It's just like, it's family oriented and that's exactly what I wanted to be and I wanted to learn from somebody like that.”
During the season, the Sanders brothers and Coach Prime have extensively campaigned for Travis Hunter to win the Heisman Trophy. They'll likely get a shout-out from Hunter if he steps on the podium for the honor.
