Jaylen Mbakwe is heading out of Alabama football. The cornerback announced his decision on social media on Monday. Following his true freshman season in Tuscaloosa, the former five-star recruit has three years of eligibility left.
“I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal,” Mbakwe said in the statement. This was not an easy decision. But I believe it's the best state for my personal and professional development and the future I’m working towards for myself and my family.”
Jaylen's decision has seemingly come as a shock to many Alabama fans. Following his standout true freshman season where he appeared in 10 games, he was expected to have an increased role in the team in 2025. Here's a look at some of the reactions online:

Jaylen Mbakwe had a noteworthy freshman season at Alabama, and as he is making his exit, he took the time to appreciate the coaches who enabled it. In his farewell, he extended his gratefulness to the Crimson Tide head coach and the defensive back coach.
“I'd like to extend my gratitude to coach (Kalen) DeBoer and coach (Freddie) Roach for believing in me and giving me the chance to prove myself,” Mbakwe wrote in the statement. “Your guidance and encouragement have shaped me in ways I can't fully express.”
Mbakwe made an immediate impact during his lone season with the Crimson Tide in 2024. He recorded 15 tackles and an interception, showcasing the talent that earned him his top-tier recruiting status.

In his farewell statement, Jaylen Mbakwe thanked his teammates for making the Alabama experience enjoyable for him. It was his first experience on the collegiate stage, and he thanked them for making it notable.
"To my fellow teammates, your support, mentorship and brotherhood have made every moment meaningful, and I'll always treasure the bonds we've created.”
Mbakwe had the opportunity to transfer away from Alabama before his freshman season after Nick Saban announced his retirement. However, he opted against that. Roughly a year later, he is taking that path. He also appreciated the fans for their support.
”To the Crimson Tide, your passion and loyalty have been a constant source of inspiration. I'm grateful for each and every one of you.”
With his exit from Tuscaloosa, Mbakwe became the third Alabama defensive back to enter the transfer portal during the current undergraduate entry window.
