Shedeur Sanders is one of the biggest names in college football. The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback has an NIL value of $5.1 million (according to On3.com) and is projected to be a 2025 NFL first-round draft pick.
Sanders' NIL value is the highest of any college athlete and is at least two million dollars more than his Buffaloes teammate Travis Hunter or Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.
However, earning this amount has some negative aspects. Shedeur appeared on the Outta Pocket podcast, hosted by Robert Griffin III, and spoke about his NIL experiences.
“I definitely love NIL, but there’s pros and cons to it. You have to feel like you've made it already. When you're able to get whatever you want any time in life, then there’s a lot of things that don’t really interest you no more... Tax is not good.”
While the NIL allows college athletes to profit from endorsements, those performers never keep their total NIL earnings.
This is because of taxation. In the United States, workers pay both federal and state taxes. Sanders pays a 37% tax rate.
Meanwhile, Colorado receives a 4.4% tax share from its star quarterback.
Shedeur Sanders speaks about how his wealth affects the locker room
Shedeur Sanders also spoke to RGIII about his spending habits. He recently bought a $400,000 Rolls Royce. Griffin asked if these expensive purchases created a rift in the Buffaloes locker room.
“If I’m riding around in something, they are going to be riding around in it too, basically. So it’s not really just like flexing or nothing. ”
Sanders is putting a positive spin on things, essentially saying he shares the wealth.
The Buffaloes' locker room seems united at the moment. The team has a 2-1 record and opens Big 12 play this weekend against the Baylor Bears.
