There’s a lot of attention on Sonny Dykes and what his TCU team could do in the Big 12 in the 2024 college football season following the departure of Texas and Oklahoma. The departure of the two powerhouses is seen as a huge opportunity for the Horned Frogs to bounce back.

However, Dykes is well aware of the threat the four new teams from the Pac-12 bring to the conference next season, especially Utah. The coach spoke well of the Utes, who are currently considered favorites for the Big 12 championship, during his Media Days session.

“It’s going to be a great league to watch, week in, week out. Obviously, we're adding some very successful teams. You look at Utah and the success they've had over the last 20, 25 years, it's been on par with just about anybody in college football,” Dykes said (via Javier Morales on X).

Sonny Dykes admits the struggles of 2023

After winning the Big 12 championship and appearing in the national championship game during the 2022 season, TCU was expected to return as a force in 2023. However, the Horned Frogs had a largely disappointing season, which ended without a bowl game qualification.

During the Media Days in Las Vegas, Sonny Dykes spoke about last season.

“That was a hard year,” Dykes said. “I really didn’t see it coming … We never felt like we gelled as a team. It just never felt like our teams typically feel.”
“It all starts with me,” Dykes added. “I did a really poor job last year of not recognizing some issues we had early and not getting them addressed. It felt like we were playing catch-up the whole time.”

Sonny Dykes believes TCU will bounce back

The 2024 college football season comes with a lot of hope for TCU, and Sonny Dykes see a chance for redemption. He noted that the standard the players have set for each other ahead of the upcoming season outweighs the last.

“I think we’ve come a long way,” Dykes said. “I just think our attitude, the standard that these players set for each other and hold themselves to is different than last year’s team. There’s not a whole lot of talk about individual accolades or getting to the league or any of that kind of thing.”

There are a series of expectations for TCU in the upcoming season, especially as the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams. However, the fans will expect a bowl game qualification.
