Cam Newton, a former NFL quarterback who led the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016, commented about Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in April. Newton had said Sanders should not be a top-four NFL draft pick. So, when Newton tried to speak to Sanders before the Buffaloes' eventual 48-21 victory over UCF, the interaction was brief.

Newton extended his hand for a handshake, which Sanders briefly acknowledged before turning away. It appeared to be an awkward moment that drew the attention of media members over this past weekend.

Shedeur Sanders is a young player who is still trying to build a name for himself, and as a result, he has tried not to comment much on Cam Newton publicly. However, Terrell Owens, a Hall of Fame wide receiver, does not need to worry about backlash at this point in his career.

So, when Owens was on the "Bubba Dub Show" on Wednesday, he commented on Cam Netwon's comments on Sanders. He said:

"Especially for someone who has accomplished so much and you see someone who is trying to achieve and accomplish the things Cam has achieved and to use all this negative talk, to undercut someone like this for clickbait or to gain traction for your podcast, that's not cool. For me, it's borderline hating. It's trying to hide behind some constructive criticism."

Owens also talked about the success Sanders has had and how he has done things no one thought he'd be capable of.

"I just don't understand the commentary behind trying to minimize this guy's accomplishments thus far," Owens said. "Everyone was very critical, saying he wasn't going to be able to do any of things he's been able to do at a Power 5 school. He's done that, and some, and more. What more do you want?"

Shedeur Sanders tries to downplay his beef with Cam Newton

While Owens defended him, Shedeur Sanders later tried to downplay the beef with Cam Newton to the media, saying this about this weekend's interaction to reporters:

"I was just saying what's up. That's all that really happened. He said something, personally, I didn't agree with. We talked about it, and we had a great conversation, but how I feel is how I feel about anything and everything. I just got to work in areas of my life about forgiving. That's what dad teaches me overall."

Sanders went on to say he wants to get advice from people in a position like Newton.
