The Texas Longhorns took on the Texas A&M Aggies in Week 14 of college football action. This was the return of a rivalry that had been dormant for 13 years, after the Aggies left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. Coach Steve Sarkisian's team won 17-7 in College Station to punch the Longhorns' ticket to the conference championship game.
During his postgame news conference, Sarkisian revealed how the Longhorns won the pivotal game.
"Defensively tonight, an absolutely dominant performance," Steve Sarkisian said. "The game is won upfront. We don't play flag football. We don't play 7-on-7. You've got to be really good upfront, especially in this conference."
College football fans on X had a lot to say, after the Texas Longhorns reached the SEC championship game at the expense of the Texas A&M Aggies.
Some fans chose to mock the Aggies for the loss to the Longhorns in the rivalry game.
"Texas A&M the Cowboys of CFB," one fan tweeted.
"A&M forever irrelevant," another fan tweeted.
"THEY HATE US CUZ THEY AIN’T US," one fan tweeted.
Arch Manning vs. Quinn Ewers Texas issue crops up ahead of SEC championship
The issue of whether Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian would play backup quarterback Arch Manning, over Quinn Ewers who sustained an ankle injury in the Week 13 game against the Kentucky Wildcats, was a point of debate throughout the evening and in the leadup to the game.
Ewers started but it was Manning who rushed for the game's first touchdown to give Sarkisian a problem of plenty, in his quarterback room. During his postgame news conference, Sarkisian who has insisted repeatedly that he prefers not to rotate his quarterbacks revealed why he opted for Manning against the Texas A&M Aggies.
"We've had that going for a little bit," Sarkisian said. "Just figuring out the right timing for it. And then, naturally, this week with Quinn being limited, we just wanted to keep him (Manning) engaged in the game and find some opportunities for him."
The Longhorns coach revealed that he challenged Quinn Ewers to step up during training this past week and during his postgame news conference, Ewers revealed how that giddy-up sparked his performance against the Aggies.
"It's definitely tough dealing with certain injuries," Ewers said. "...You just want to be out there with your guys. You almost feel guilty whenever you're not, just from all the work that we put in together. I'm glad that I was able to practice well and get the 'Go' from coach Sark."
Ewers carried the ball four times for 29 yards registering his best rushing game this season while Manning carried the ball three times for 14 yards which resulted in one touchdown.
The Longhorns have reached the SEC championship game at the first time of asking and their ability to field both Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning is an embarrassment of riches that many programs do not have.
