There’s a lot of anticipation on Texas ahead of the 2024 college football season. The Longhorns will be playing their first season in the Southeastern Conference and many are eager to see how the program will fare in what is known as the most competitive conference in the realm.
Aside from playing in a new league, Texas won't have any returning starters at wide receiver in the upcoming season. Nonetheless, the team's offensive coordinator Kyle Flood has a lot of confidence in the wide receiver room, which has brought in a couple of new faces like former Alabama WR Isaiah Bond via the transfer portal.
"Even though we don't have the returning starts [at receiver], necessarily here at Texas for that position group that we do at some other positions, we have a lot of confidence in that receiver room," said offensive coordinator Kyle Flood." (h/t SI)
While Texas lost a brilliant group of receivers to the NFL this offseason, the new wide receiver room is rich in talent. It boasts names like Isaiah Bond, Ryan Wingo, Silas Bolden and Matthew Golden who are good replacements for the likes of Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and Adonai Mitchell.
In 2023, Bond recorded 48 receptions for 668 yards and four touchdowns last season at Alabama while Bolden had 54 receptions for 746 yards and five touchdowns at Oregon State. Golden was also impressive at Houston with 38 receptions for 404 yards and six touchdowns.
Quin Ewers elated to work with the new Texas receivers
Having to work with a new set of wide receivers is a daunting task for Quinn Ewers. However, the Texas quarterback is happy with the challenge as it helps him learn and develop better. His chemistry with the previous set of wideouts was superb and he will have to build that with the new group.
"A lot of new faces in that room," Ewers said. "It made my job a whole lot easier having J Whitt and Xavier in that room to help those younger guys, but now we don't really have an old head like J Whitt in that room to help those guys figure it out." (h/t SI)
"But it's good for me because I get to learn more about how to help those guys and just trying to get more comfortable being in that position."
With the experience the likes of Isaiah Bond, Silas Bolden and Mathew Golden have garnered in the landscape, Ewers shouldn't have much problem connecting with his receivers in the upcoming season. It shouldn't be much different from what he had in the previous season.
The success of the Longhorns in the SEC has a lot to do with the performance of its offense. Steve Sarkisian has built one of the most explosive offenses in college football, finishing top 25 or better in the country in scoring each of the last three years, and it will be crucial to keep this momentum in the upcoming season.
