College football fans had some unique reactions to the news that Johntay Cook is no longer with the Texas Longhorns. After the news became public on Thursday, fans took to social media to share their reactions to the news that Texas lost an impact offensive weapon midway through the season.
Some fans said that coach Steve Sarkisian had lost control of the locker room, while others guessed that Texas ran out of Lambo money.
"I guess Texas ran out of Lambo money," a fan said.
The common theme from fans is they believe Texas didn't live up to their NIL agreement with Cook.
"Wow, I really had high hopes for him. This one hurts," a fan said.
"He had some HUGE drops this season and was like our WR6," another fan said.
Cook hadn't been used all that much this season, which could have played a role in his departure.
"Johntay how quickly can you get to Oxford," a fan said.
This season, Cook recorded 8 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The receiver was in his sophomore season but he hadn't caught a pass since the Longhorns' September 28 win against Mississippi State.
Cook was a four-star recruit in the class of 2023 and the seventh-ranked wide receiver (per 247 Sports).
Johntay Cook and Texas mutually part ways
According to college football insider Mike Roach of 247Sports, the Texas Longhorns and Johntay Cook mutually agreed to part ways.
"The receiver had been battling a toe injury this season and had fallen behind in the receiver rotation in Austin," Roach wrote. "According to those close to him, Cook was considering going into the NCAA Transfer Portal at the conclusion of the season."
According to Roach, Cook had thought about returning to Texas to play with Arch Manning next season. But, after some time, the team and Cook decided to mutually part ways.
Johntay Cook will now enter the transfer portal and will likely be a hot commodity among teams seeking a receiver. In limited play with Texas, Cook has shown he can be an impact receiver who can be a deep ball threat.
The Longhorns will return to the field on Saturday, November 9 at home at noon ET against the Florida Gators. Texas is currently ranked fifth in the college football rankings and is firmly in control of playing in the playoffs.
