The No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns will face the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners in Week 7 of the 2024 college football season. The game will kick off at 3:30 pm ET, and be held on neutral ground at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
This is the Red River Rivalry game, one of the most important games on the college football calendar.
Coming into this rivalry game, the Longhorns have a 5-0 record and are one of the few teams to still have their unbeaten record. They had a rest week last week but were able to defeat the Mississippi State Bulldogs in their last game 35-13.
In contrast, the Oklahoma Sooners have been less fortunate. That being said, they come into this game with a still-impressive 4-1 record. Like Texas, they had a rest week last week but were able to defeat the Auburn Tigers in their previous game.
Texas vs. Oklahoma Preview and prediction
The Texas Longhorns are arguably college football's strongest team and should be able to take care of the Sooners with the team they have. There's talent all around this team, from running back Jaydon Blue to wide receiver Isaiah Bond, all hoping to make the winning play against their hated rivals.
Where Texas is at its strongest is the quarterback position. Coming into this week, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian had a dilemma. He had to choose between playing Quinn Ewers, the original starter who has returned from an abdominal injury obtained a couple of games ago, or Arch Manning, who took over the role while Ewers was recovering and had a lot of success, throwing for 901 yards and nine TDs.
In the end, he chose Ewers, but whoever he picked should have a good day working with this Longhorns offense.
On the other hand, the Oklahoma Sooners have problems with their offense. After a poor start to the season, the Sooners benched quarterback Jackson Arnold and will start freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. in the biggest game of the season.
Hawkins Jr. is still a threat, but he will be without star wide receiver Deion Burks, who was ruled out of the game on Thursday. He joins an ever-growing list of wide receivers not playing in this game.
If the Sooners are to stay in this game, they are either going to have to rely on their run game (especially since freshman running back Taylor Tatum is fit for the game) and their defense.
We predict Texas to win this game 32-20.
