Curt Cignetti became the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers after last season and made an immediate impact in his debut campaign. He led the team to an impressive 11-2 record, earning them a spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers faced Notre Dame in the first round on Friday.
Cignetti's glorious run this season ended at the hands of the Fighting Irish. Marcus Freeman's team dominated from the start and secured a 27-17 victory. Before the game, Cignetti made an appearance on the College GameDay show.
While talking with Pat McAfee and others, Cignetti made a confident statement.
"There's a lot of sceptics and there's a lot of doubters," Cignetti said. "I get it right. Never beat a top 25 team. Nebraska was 25th in the Coaches Poll, beat their s**t. So we don't just beat top 25 teams, we beat the s**t out of them."
After the loss, fans trolled Cignetti about his College GameDay comments.
"That didn't age well," a fan said.
A fan said that Cignetti should have focused on preparing more than making a media presence.
"Lol maybe you should be getting your team ready to play instead of on TV poking your chest out like you did something. Play an SEC team and see if you still got that same energy."
A fan questioned Cignetti's comment about having victories over the top 25 teams.
"Who did they beat that was ranked in the top 10."
This fan said the Hoosiers did not deserve a spot in the 12-team playoffs.
"Indiana doesn't belong in the playoffs. They look like they are not on the same level as ND."
One fan felt that Cignetti might not be the best choice for the Hoosiers.
"I'd fire him. Seriously. Made a complete mockery of the program and put unannounced extra presssure on the players."
Curt Cignetti laments about his team's offensive performance against Notre Dame
In the fourth quarter of the game, Curt Cignetti made a decision that confused many fans. He decided to make a surrender punt after being down 27-3. They managed to put up two touchdowns later on.
In the postgame press conference, Cignetti explained the decision.
"I didn't want to punt," Cignetti said. "But we were doing nothing on offense. And our defense was fighting. That was the only positive, really, that I could draw, was that our defense was still fighting.
"Because offense was doing nothing. And I didn't want to go fourth-and-10, because you're just wishing and hoping: You have nothing to base it on that you can convert fourth-and-10 at that point."
The Fighting Irish will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the next round. On the other hand, Curt Cignetti will focus on helping the Hoosiers get redemption next season.
