It took Will Howard four tries and a different team but he was finally able to get past the Texas Longhorns. Now, he and Ohio State are going to the national championship game. However, the Buckeyes quarterback may have suffered an injury to his left (non-throwing) hand in the process.
During the Cotton Bowl broadcast, cameras showed a large bump on the quarterback's left hand, while it was later noted that Howard didn’t have any discomfort.
Will Howard went 24-for-33 for 289 yards with one touchdown and an interception. The former Kansas State quarterback also converted a critical fourth and short play by running for 18 yards. His hand still caught the attention of fans ahead of the national championship game.
"That looks serious," one fan said.
"Hella big hematoma," another fan said.
A couple of fans couldn't help but make puns about Howard's hand injury.
"That's knot good," one fan quipped.
"That's a natty knot," another fan wrote.
Meanwhile, another fan is convinced the Ohio State quarterback will be ready to face Notre Dame for the national title. Howard will have ten days to recover for the title game in Atlanta.
"Is it broken? If so, he's tough. He'll play through it" a fan confidently posted.
Will Howard’s classy gesture towards Quinn Ewers
After the Buckeyes clinched their national championship game berth, the Ohio State signal-caller was one of the most sought-after players by the media. After all, the fifth-year senior will be closing out his career on the biggest stage.
But Howard waited patiently, looking for Quinn Ewers the Texas starting quarterback. After finally finding and acknowledging Ewers, Howard started doing interviews.
During one such interview with ESPN's Jake Trotter, Howard addressed his left hand and said it was "just fine."
For a player who had just won his biggest game as a college quarterback, taking the time to find the opposing quarterback speaks volumes.
Howard and the Buckeyes will now face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Jan. 20 to decide the national champion.
