Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers is returning as the team's starter this year. Coach Steve Sarkisian's team will be a part of the SEC this season, beginning a new journey for the program in college football.
Last season, the Longhorns managed to qualify for the playoffs while winning the Big 12 championship. Quinn Ewers put up impressive numbers, recording a total of 3,479 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns. However, they were eliminated by the Washington Huskies in the semifinals.
Now, apart from their SEC debut, the Longhorns will also be reviving their rivalry against the Texas A&M Aggies. And Ewers is excitedly waiting to witness the atmosphere of the iconic rivalry game first-hand:
"Unreal," Ewers said while talking about the Texas vs Texas A&M rivalry game this year. "Especially being there too. I'm excited for that one. It's been 12 years I think now. That place is gonna be rowdy. I got a, I hate to say it, but I got a couple of buddies that go there. So they are pretty excited about it too. It's going to be an unbelievable atmosphere especially it being back on that Thanksgiving weekend."
The Texas versus Texas A&M rivalry game took place annually from 1915 to 2011. It was brought to an abrupt halt when the Aggies joined the SEC after the 2011 season.
The Longhorns lead the overall head-to-head 76-37-5 and both teams are slated to face off once again on Nov. 30 after a hiatus of over a decade. When they last faced off at College Station during the 2011 season, the Aggies lost 27-25. This year's showdown will be a chance for them to get their long-awaited revenge on the Longhorns.
Quinn Ewers has a lot of faith in Steve Sarkisian
While speaking to Robert Griffin III on his podcast "Outta Pocket with RGIII" earlier in June, the Texas QB spoke highly about his coach. Ewers said Sarkisian knows what he is doing because of the experience he has accumulated both as a player and a coach.
He also said that Sarkisian has produced several talented players who went on to shine in the NFL. Ewers believes this makes him a trustworthy head coach who focuses on player development:
"Just him being in the position that we've been in, he played college quarterback and then went to the Canadian League. So he obviously knows what it feels like to be in our shoes. And, you know, he said, I mean, we're getting a PhD in quarterback play here," Ewers said.
"So he's been there. He's done that, you know, Heisman Trophy winners. He's had first-round draft picks. So, I mean, you'd be silly not to trust the guy," he added.
