Shedeur Sanders, the potential No. 1 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, has not been named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. However, his Colorado Buffaloes teammate Travis Hunter was, and is the overwhelming favorite to win the award.
In the aftermath, a quote about Heisman Trophy candidate Dillon Gabriel, supposedly from Sanders, has been making the rounds online.
"I had better number than that boy for Oregon"
Sanders responded to someone posting this quote on social media and revealed it is fake.
"Cmon stop with the lies I never said this. That’s foul for sharing fake news."
Dillon Gabriel had an excellent year with the Oregon Ducks. He threw for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns, becoming a key part in the Ducks' undefeated regular season and Big Ten Championship win against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
This gave Oregon the top seed in the College Football Playoff, and there is a strong possibility the Ducks could win it all.
Sanders threw for 3,926 yards and threw for 35 touchdowns in 2024 with the Buffaloes. These figures are more than what Gabriel produced. However, the Heisman Trophy is not based on who made the most yards or scored the most touchdowns. If it was, then Sanders would be one of the favorites.
The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best player in college footbal. While Sanders was definitely a strong player this year, he did not have the same impact as Gabriel.
Gabriel is a key reason why Oregon is undefeated. Sanders has been good for Colorado, but he was likely overshadowed by Hunter when it came to individual accolades.
Shedeur Sanders on his Allegent Stadium photo
Last week, Shedeur Sanders posted on Instagram a photo of Allegent Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders. This was accompanied by the word "legendary".
On a recent edition of "The Travis Hunter Podcast", Sanders explained why he did this.
"It was a nice stadium, bro.”
Sanders has been heavily linked to the Las Vegas Raiders, a team set to have a high first round pick.
His comment could be genuine, and Sanders does like the look of the stadium. But, it could also be seen as an attempt to deflect and downplay the speculation of a move to the Raiders, one that is looking more and more likely.
