Texas quarterback Arch Manning has played a small role in the Longhorns' march to the Cotton Bowl Classic against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers has taken most of the Longhorns' snaps during their extended college football playoffs reviving the debate among fans about whether Manning should enter the transfer portal to get more playing time.
Off the gridiron, during Wednesday's segment of CNBC's "Power Lunch," Manning's famous uncle, Eli Manning, railed against the current state of college football where players can transfer as many times as possible during their eligibility.
"I'm a little bit worried and I'm fine that players are getting paid and this is a big business. College football is making tonnes of money and players deserve to be rewarded," Eli said (0:33).
"But just the fact that the easy transferring and basically, each player is a free agent twice a year I feel like there's not a whole lot of loyalty to your college, your coach, your school. It's all about who's making the most money and just moving around and chasing the most money and that's not the idea of sports, that's not the idea of college football."
Arch Manning part of transfer portal drama with Quinn Ewers
For a long time, the Quinn Ewers versus Arch Manning situation has been debated among fans and analysts.
During Tuesday's segment of the "Rich Eisen Show," the host revealed that Ewers has not been receiving favorable feedback from draft evaluators.
"A conversation I'm hearing is that a lot of NFL evaluators are telling Quinn Ewers, stay in college," Eisen said (5:25 onwards). "And as we all know, if he stays in college for another year, it's not gonna be at Texas 'cause that's Arch Manning's gig next year and that's all playing out behind the scenes.
"Anytime Arch Manning does come on the field for that coach, for that quarterback, because Quinn Ewers behind these scenes, not on the field is hearing from a bunch of people saying 'Stay in college and go and make a killing in the transfer portal for one more year.'"
A report by On3's Pete Nakos on Monday revealed that Ewers was the subject of a $6 million offer from an unnamed program to enter the transfer portal.
Meanwhile, Ewers could bother less about his impending future decision since a big game is coming up.
"I mean, right now, I'm just, I'm just not worried about all that stuff," Ewers said. "I mean, people can say all they want to say, but, you know, I'm just focused on focus on Friday at this point in time."
The manner in which the Arch Manning versus Quinn Ewers situation will develop will be of immense interest to college football fans with so much at stake for both quarterbacks.
