Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel has put himself in the record books this season. He is the current NCAA record holder in most touchdowns scored, and was able to win third place in the 2024 Heisman Trophy vote, which was won by Colorado Buffaloes star, Travis Hunter.
The Ducks have made the College Football Playoff with an undefeated record. This, alongside winning the Big Ten Conference Championship means that the Ducks are on a bye week this week and Dillon is not playing.
However, despite the individual accolades that Dillon won, he is focused on winning things as a team. He told reporters:
"If I wanted individual awards, I would've played tennis or golf, but I'm playing football, so I'm chasing wins, and I know what I'm not chasing."
However, many fans aren't buying it, with arguments following in the comments section. Colorado was brought into the equation often, as was the Heisman Trophy:
"Dillon Gabriel old a*s mad he ain’t win Heisman 😂 “I’m chasing wins” yeah we know. That’s why you transferred 13 times 😂 lame ah nihh."
These fans have shared the sentiment that Gabriel is only being included in things like the Heisman Trophy because he plays for a top-team
"Plus his a*s didn’t even deserve to be there!," this fan said.
"I Doubt He Ever Thought He Was Going To Win Heisman But He Will Be Winning The Natty Hating A*s Ni**a," another fan said.
"Why do these ni**as get on super teams, and act like they’re the reason the team is winning?" asked this fan.
"Too bad he’s doing press conferences about how salty he is that he didn’t win lmao only mad one here is him," another fan said.
"Dude looked more upset than Jeanty when Travis was announced as the winner. I was like 'b*tch, why are you so salty when it was a 2 man race this whole time?,'”another fan said.
Dillon Gabriel's transfer history & Heisman reflections
The Oregon Ducks are the third team Dillon Gabriel has played for during his College Football career. He started at UCF in 2019 where he quickly became the starter and led the programs to bowl games in both of his seasons. His 2021 was cut short due to injury, and after this, he moved to the Oklahoma Sooners.
Gabriel was again successful with the Sooners, and it looked like he would be staying there for the rest of his career. But then, Gabriel transferred for his senior year to Oregon, replacing long-term quarterback Bo Nix. Here, he has been most successful and is setting himself up for a good position in the 2025 NFL draft, which he may come into as a national champion.
Dillon Gabriel has spoken about his experience at the Heisman presentation, telling Sports Illustrated:
"I'm just glad I got to represent our guys. You look at a body of work as a whole, as a unit, and you just appreciate all that goes into it. I'm glad I could represent them. I met a lot of great people. I had a lot of great conversations. I'm grateful and blessed to have been a part of that too."
In reality, Gabriel (along with fellow nominated quarterback Cam Ward) was an unlikely candidate to win the award. It was always going to be between Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who each had much stronger seasons than Gabriel.
However, he was happy to be at the ceremony, representing his teammates and acknowledging the hard work they had done this season. But the work does not stop now, and Dillon Gabriel and the Oregon Ducks prepare for the upcoming CFP.
