After serving as the UCLA Bruins offensive coordinator for one season, Eric Bieniemy has been fired by the franchise. The Bruins struggled to adapt to the Big Ten during this year and had a 5-7 record.
College football fans reacted to this news.
"That’s so wild. I remember when he was supposed to be the next HC of the Chiefs," another fan tweeted.
"Remember when he was going to be the next great NFL coach? That was 3 years ago," a fan tweeted.
Additionally, these fans are not surprised Bieniemy has been fired, given his record with the Bruins and his previous programs.
"He was Colorado's OC in 2010 and 2011 and we were awful so I saw this coming a long ways off," another fan tweeted.
Did Eric Bieniemy help the Bruins?
During this one season, the Bruins' offense was one of the worst in college football, ranking 117th in passing yards and 126th in points scored.
However, with an offense without a highly experienced or talented quarterback, it is no surprise that UCLA struggled.
Bieniemy had NFL experience coming into the job. He was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs during their recent dominant period. UCLA thought he would bring that "magic" over from Kansas City, but that did not happen.
However, in a statement from his agent, this is all part of the plan for Bieniemy.
"After interviewing for head coaching jobs last year, he (Eric Bieniemy) wanted to stay active and busy," the agent said. "So, he decided to go help out Deshaun Foster, who is like his little brother, at UCLA as opposed to sitting out a year. The plan was always to return to the NFL in 2025, and he's looking forward to the opportunities ahead."
Maybe this year with UCLA was planned, and he was always going to leave at the end of the season. But, Bieniemy could not have planned for a weak offense, which will likely leave its mark on his resume.
