DeShaun Foster is entering his first season with UCLA this year. The Bruins coach got onto the podium for the program's Big Ten media day on Wednesday but many believed that his opening statement was bland and awkward.
Several fans on X had their say on Foster's opening comments as the coach seemed to lose his train of thought and chuckled when he could not get the words out.
"That had to be the worst opening statement I’ve ever heard before. Typical Bruins," one fan said.
"I really kind of expect that to sum up his entire tenure," another fan said.
"Yikes," a fan said.
Some fans also took sarcastic jabs at Foster for his struggles on the podium at UCLA's Big Ten media day.
"Inspiring stuff," one fan said.
"Best Coaching hire in UCLA history lol!!!!" another fan said.
"That’s actually quite funny if you know how Foster speaks," one fan said.
Foster was promoted as head coach at UCLA on February 12, 2024, after serving seven years as the team's running backs coach. He replaces Chip Kelly, who left the Bruins to take up the offensive coordinator role at Ohio State. UCLA finished with an 8-5 record in Kelly's last season at the helm.
DeShaun Foster prepared for first-year head coaching job at UCLA
Although DeShaun Foster may have had issues with his opening statements at the Big Ten media day, the UCLA coach insisted that he is up for the challenges ahead.
“Being a first-year head coach, I needed to make sure I had somebody that I didn’t have to micromanage,” Foster said (per Omaha World-Herald). “He’s an established offensive coordinator.”
“It’s part of the game. If you want to play big-time ball, you’re going to have to travel. I think we’re looking forward to that.”
Foster will want to get off to a winning start in his coaching career when UCLA opens its 2024 college football season on the road against Hawaii on August 31.
