On Tuesday, the Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, signed an executive order that allows State schools to compensate their students with NIL opportunities. This will allow the student athletes of the respective schools to earn money from any NIL deal.
This decision has felt a long time coming, considering the large impact that NIL has had on the lives of college athletes, who are now slowly moving away from the NCAA model of unpaid amateurs.
Here is how fans on social media reacted to this news. This fan is happy to hear this news:
"this is great, student athletes deserve to get paid," said the fan.
These fans, though, believe that there are other, more pressing issues that the Governor should be working on. They think that this executive order will not help the actual problem in the state.
"The kids at Apalachee High School feel safer already," said this fan
"Thank god, I was very worried about the state of NIL in Georgia, as there are certainly no other more pressing issues," said another fan
"So glad he's working on anything but gun control. Lol....Georgia," said a third fan.
"More concerned about that than the 'Election Board' that's planning to cheat," said this fan.
These people are trying to work out how this scheme will work, and who will be eligible:
"Curious how this money flow will be tracked or audited. Seems like an obvious f/u question," said this person.
"Assuming you mean state colleges and universities, and not public high/middle/elementary schools?" Said this person.
"State Schools? You mean public schools?" Said a third person.
Finally, these people believe that this decision will pave the way for sports gambling to be legalized in the state of Georgia.
"Cool, now do sports betting," said this person.
"They need to have casino gaming or sports betting. People already gambling online and other streams, minus well capitalize it,"said another person.
"I'd be more impressed if the turd would take some executive action to protect our vote this November. But it looks like helping sports betting is more his thing," said a third person.
What does the new law in Georgia allow?
This new law allows Georgia-based universities to pay their players directly for the use of their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). The law also forbids the NCAA from punishing those schools that do this.
According to Governor Kemp, the law will put Georgia's schools “on a level playing field." This is important as other states have already signed NIL laws, allowing players in those states to get paid.
This is, as we have seen many times, a pulling factor for some players to play for certain programs. Now, Georgia schools will be able to have that same effect.
The law has also been signed now as the national agreement to allow players across the country to be paid is stalling.
When the NCAA settlement is agreed upon, what we are seeing in states like Georgia, Virginia and California will be seen across the whole of college sports. This will forever change the status of its athletes from purely amateurs who get rewarded with an education, to a situation that is very similar to what is seen professionally.
