Miami native rapper Pitbull purchased the naming rights of Florida International University's (FIU) football stadium, renaming it Pitbull Stadium. The international rapper will pay $1.2 million per year for the next five years, thus making the deal worth $6 million in total. FIU also became the first college to have an athletics building named after a musician.
The rapper's naming right deal was discussed on "The Pat McAfee Show" and made the panelists excited for the university and the rapper. AJ Hawk introduced the news to his co-hosts and detailed the financial aspect of the deal.
One of the panelists said:
"Bingo to Pitbull Stadium. I mean, if I am in college and I'm looking around, especially in Florida, I'm sh**ting my pants. So, if I'm the UMiami, I'm worried now that every single recruit in Florida is gonna say, 'I don't wanna go to play at some stadium that you guys haven't built yet. I wanna go play at the Pitbull Stadium.'" (0:29)
This is what Mr. Worldwide said when the deal was introduced to the world of sports:
"For me, what it boils down to is, Miami is always known for being underdogs, no matter what we do and what level we take it to," Pitbull said, as per ESPN."... Being underdogs is what I always felt about FIU -- fighting, clawing their way to just be seen, to be recognized whether it be from education, business, through sports.
"So when this idea came about, it came about just like a Miami-Dade County, 305 idea would come about -- nobody would believe in it. ... All we had to do was, just like we say in Miami, take it to the house."
Pitbull's deal includes co-branded merchandise, music videos on campus, and more
There are several ways that the university will try to benefit from the fame of the world-renowned artist. As per Sportico, the rapper is required to promote the university's athletics in 12 social media posts, appear on campus, allow FIU to create co-branded merchandise, which will sell on the FIU campus and at his concerts, and feature the university in his future music videos.
Additionally, the artist's Voli 305 Vodka brand will be the "preferred" vodka served in the stadium and its suites. He also has the right to use the 23,300-seat venue 10 days each year for concerts or other events.
