Traeshon Holden was ejected from Oregon’s 32-31 win against Ohio State at Autzen Stadium on Saturday for unsportsmanlike conduct. The wide receiver spat at Buckeyes' defensive back Davison Igbinosun amid an altercation.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning confirmed that Traeshon Holden will be disciplined internally for his action in the narrow victory over the Buckeyes in his weekly media availability on Monday. Expressing his disappointment, the coach also disclosed the move he’s made to address the situation.
“I'm extremely disappointed in his actions within the game," Lanning said per the Stateman Journal. "There's absolutely zero place for that in our program and zero place for that in football. I reached out to coach (Ryan) Day and expressed my frustration with that situation.”
“I know Traeshon is extremely apologetic. He's embarrassed. He's realized how wrong he was in that moment and we will handle some things internally. There is some discipline that exists there but I'm going to leave that for us internally to handle and communicate."
The specifics of the discipline Traeshon Holden will face remain uncertain. It’s unclear whether his ejection during last Saturday's game will lead to additional suspension or missed game time.
Traeshon Holden issues apology for his actions
Traeshon Holden has made moves to make up for his unsportsmanlike conduct against Davison Igbinosun in the game on Saturday. The wide receiver issued a public apology on social media on Sunday.
In his post, Holden expressed deep regret for his highly disappointing actions, which have come under criticism. He offered an apology to his Oregon teammates, Ducks fans, Ohio State supporters, and specifically to Buckeyes cornerback Davison Igbinosun.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during our recent game,” Holden wrote. “My actions were not only disrespectful but also a betrayal of the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and respect that I strive to embody as a student-athlete.”
“...Moving forward, I am committed to making meaningful changes, not only in managing my emotions during competition but in setting a better example for my teammates and the broader community. I am determined to demonstrate growth and maturity, both on and off the field, and I hope to earn back the trust of those I've let down.”
Holden wasn't the only player to have his time on the field cut short in the Week 7 actions. Memphis running back Mario Anderson got ejected on Saturday for sitting at USF defensive tackle Doug Blue-Eli. The Tigers coach also criticized Anderson's action on Monday.
In six games this season, Traeshon Holden has recorded 20 receptions for 306 yards and three touchdowns. He is in a good position to better his numbers in 2023, when he recorded 37 catches for 452 yards and six touchdowns.
