Urban Meyer was one of the respected figures in college football who gave a good review of Deion Sanders’ Colorado team ahead of the 2023 college football season. The Buffaloes started brilliantly, winning the first three games. However, they ended with a 4-8 record.
With Colorado performing beyond expectations this season, Meyer explained why he never stopped believing in Colorado on "The Triple Option" podcast on Tuesday.
“I’m not a big fan of the watches. … It’s almost uncomfortable for me seeing some of the stuff,” Meyer said. “And if I didn’t go to watch the practice and see Prime coach and see the coaching staff and the players respond, I would have sold my stock on that a long time ago.
“If you noticed, I never sold my stock, even last year when they kind of fell apart. “So there is substance behind it. I don't know how good they continue to, you know, what's the number of wins, but I’m telling you, there’s substance behind that program.”
Attending Colorado practice ahead of the 2023 season gave Urban Meyer the confidence
Urban Meyer visited Colorado ahead of the 2023 college football season and attended the team's practice. This gave him the opportunity to see the Buffaloes’ team firsthand and assess their possibility of success in college football.
Meyer, who won the national championship three times at Florida and Ohio State combined, saw a brilliant Colorado team preparing for the 2023 college football season. This gave him great confidence in the program, believing it’s bound for success in the landscape.
“I went last year to see them practice because I know we had some games, and I just thought, do my job,” Meyer said on The Triple Option. “This is unchartered waters. I’ve known Coach Prime for a long time. We’ve been friends, and he invited me in.
“I went to meetings, I went to practice, and I texted you guys and called you guys and said, ‘guys, this is not a 1-10 program, that they have good players, couple great players, and there’s some substance behind what shows up in press conferences and all that.’”
While many still project a woeful season like 2023 despite their brilliant start, people like Urban Meyer remain confident the program is on the route to success.
Colorado has an open week in Week 6. The Buffaloes welcome Kansas State to Boulder when they return to action in Week 7.
