Ohio State coach Ryan Day is still dealing with the fallout from the Buckeyes' 13-10 loss to rivals Michigan Wolverines in Week 14 despite being 20.5-point favorites for the clash. Day has a 66-10 record against the rest of his opponents in college football but is just 1-4 against the Wolverines.
On Tuesday's episode of the "All Facts, No Brakes" podcast, analyst Keyshawn Johnson spoke about the noise around Day's future and Buckeyes' fans' assertions he should be fired even if he wins the national championship.
"I don't think anyone should be fired but in here, he's gotta figure out a way to win against Michigan and figure out how to get Ohio State to a national championship," Johnson said. "That's just the reality of it, the expectations are huge at the Horshoe. So far, not good.
"They (Ohio State fans who want Day fired even if the Buckeyes win the national championship) are just talking. They get caught up in the Michigan, the team up North hype."
During his weekly news conference Wednesday, Day revealed he still expected to be the Ohio State coach next season despite another loss to Michigan.
"Yes. This is a wonderful place," Ryan Day said. "I have a great job, one of the best jobs in America. It's a challenge at times. I'm disappointed about this more than anybody. It crushes me. I was in shock after the game.
"When you come up short in The Game, it's devastating. But we still have a great opportunity in front of us."
Ryan Day gets scathing criticism from analyst
Despite the Buckeyes falling to No. 6 in the latest college football playoff ranking, Day's team is almost a lock to make an appearance in the expanded 12-team college football playoffs.
During Tuesday's segment of "ESPN College Football," outspoken analyst Paul Finebaum was scathing when discussing Day's future.
"The bottom line is he has to make a serious run Heather. First-round knockout, I'd fire him on the field before he gets to the midfield," Finebaum said. "I still think he probably oughta go. This guy has been a very good coach, 66-10. But when you lose to your rival every single year, four straight.
"So we're talking about three revenge games and the same result happens, especially this year. It's time to start packing."
Day is on perhaps the hottest seat in college football with yet another loss against Michigan counting against his legacy. Can he turn it around with a deep run in the playoff?
