Kirby Smart's hopes of winning another national championship with the Georgia Bulldogs suffered a setback in Week 11. The Ole Miss Rebels surprised college football fans after securing a 28-10 victory over Georgia. The Rebels' offense and defense both put up a masterclass that left the Bulldogs with a sour taste in their mouth.
In the post-game press conference, Kirby Smart came forward to heap praise on Lane Kiffin and his team despite the disappointing loss. He talked about how he had warned his team that the Rebels were a good program and how they had incredible talents on their roster.
"First of a lot of credit to Ole Miss. Great atmosphere. They played a really good game. Lane had his team ready to play. We obviously struggled in a lot of areas... I told our team coming this week. I felt like they were probably the most talented team that we have played counting both sides of the ball and special plays."
"They have elite specialists and they have really good players on defense and skills on offense....A lot of credit goes to Lane and his staff. They really should be undefeated....They're playing good football and they outplayed us tonight."
Kirby Smart took over as Georgia's head coach back in 2016. He led the program to two consecutive national championships during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. However, Smart's hopes of adding another natty to his trophy cabinet hang by a thread following this upset loss to Ole Miss.
Georgia QB Carson Beck once again had an underwhelming performance on the field for his team. He recorded a total of 186 passing yards while throwing one interception. Beck was sacked five times during the game as he failed to make any scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs against the Rebels.
Kirby Smart talks about the level of competition this season in the SEC
The SEC saw the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the conference ahead of the 2024 season. Kirby Smart talked about how this brought a new level of competitiveness to the conference in his post-game press conference.
"I mean, welcome to the SEC baby," Smart said. "I said when the season started that it was gonna be the toughest schedule we ever had in the SEC with the addition of Texas game on top of all the others we had to play. It's extremely tough, its difficult."
He then went on to state that the team will be looking to make a comeback in next week's showdown against Tennessee.
"But you know what, our future's in front of us. We've got a big game next week. We've got to go out and we've got to find a way to execute at a higher level."
The remaining regular season games are going to be crucial for Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs if they want to stay in the playoff race. It will be interesting to see if they can go on to secure a victory over the Tennessee Volunteers next week.
