Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis flipped his commitment from the USC Trojans to the Colorado Buffaloes four weeks ago. This was a huge coup for coach Deion Sanders due to the status of the QB as the No. 2 prospect in the class of 2025, according to ESPN.
Lewis's commitment was also crucial for Coach Prime in his endeavor to replace his son, the NFL-bound Shedeur Sanders. Showing the regard with which Lewis is held, Coach Prime even incorporated the quarterback into Buffs' practices for the Alamo Bowl clash against the BYU Cougars which Colorado lost 36-14 on Saturday.
On Sunday, Lewis posted a picture on X of his gear next to Shedeur's in the dressing room with a heartfelt message and promise for the departing quarterback.
"You left huge shoes to fill, but I promise to work to leave @CUBuffsFootball even better than I found it. Forever grateful #TrustGod #TrustTheProcess," Julian Lewis tweeted.
A Colorado fan in the comment section hyped up Lewis noting that everyone is rooting for him. The quarterback replied with a reality check:
"Be great, young man! We’re all rooting for you! #SkoBuffs," the fan tweeted.
"No they’re not but that’s ok. #KeepWorking," Lewis replied.
Coach Prime compared Julian Lewis to Shedeur Sanders
Last week, during a pre-Alamo Bowl news conference, the charismatic Deion Sanders compared Julian Lewis to his son Shedeur Sanders due to their shared family background and how they approach the game (7:00).
“I think smart coaches at this level understand what has worked for them, and they try their best to replicate that,” Deion Sanders said. “Shedeur’s worked really well for us. He has a wonderful father in his life. Father has always been there. Father just knows the game and a father that’s hands-on.
"I saw a lot of similarities in the way Julian’s life has been structured, speaking to his father multitude of times, understanding how he came up, what he wants out of life, what he wants out of the game, and from the game, and what he gives to the game. The similarities are unbelievable.”
Despite acquiring junior quarterback Kaidon Slater from the Liberty Flames via the transfer portal a week ago, Coach Prime lavished praise on Julian Lewis. Sanders highlighted the specific qualities that made Lewis the ideal replacement for Shedeur.
"He’s (Lewis) everything that we desire in a quarterback. He’s smart, he could throw, make, every throw," Deion said. "He has pocket awareness, pocket presence. He is a darn leader, but most of all, he’s a winner. People forget that category when you look at the quarterback. Are they winners?"
Julian Lewis took several trips to Colorado before flipping his commitment from USC. He will likely have a battle with Kaidon Salter on his hands to be Colorado's QB1 and Shedeur Sander's successor.
