It's been seven years since Baker Mayfield last made his college football appearance for Oklahoma. However, it seems he hasn’t been forgotten in Texas as he became a subject of discussion after the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
After Texas dominated Oklahoma in a 34-3 victory on Saturday, the Longhorns’ defensive stars Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell made a statement. They took an Oklahoma jersey with Baker Mayfield's iconic No. 6, laid it at midfield, and planted the University of Texas flag through it.
Baker Mayfield, who now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, was asked by ESPN's Jenna Laine about the flag incident following the Bucs' 51-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, and he responded:
“Just a kid from Austin, Texas that went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games and being rent-free in their heads for almost a decade," Mayfield said.
Mayfield's words were straight and nonchalant, leading to reactions from fans. Here’s a look at some of the reactions online:
"Cooked them. It’s been years and they are still haunted by Baker lol"
"That man caused generational trauma in Austin. Lol," another fan added.
"Great reply. He's been great for the Bucs!" a fan commented.
Other reactions praised Mayfield's comment:
"Dude has got class, and killing it out there. Horns down!!" a fan wrote.
"Texas fans know it’s true too," another fan wrote.
"Amazing comment," another fan commented.
During his time at Oklahoma, Mayfield went 2-1 in the Red River Rivalry, winning his final two matchups against Texas. However, being born in Austin and playing for Oklahoma made him a loathed figure in the Longhorn’s fanbase.
Anthony Hill Jr. believes planting Baker Mayfield jersey with flag was "right thing for me to do"
While there are criticisms of his planting of Baker Mayfield's jersey at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday in some quarters, Anthony Hill Jr. sees nothing wrong in his actions. The Texas linebacker had his reasons for the gesture.
"I just felt like it was the right thing for me to do," Hill Jr. said postgame. "I'd seen all the stuff they (Oklahoma) posted last year, so I felt like it was right for me to get a little touch of something on them.”
Mayfield himself is no stranger to flag-planting incidents. In a 2017 road win against Ohio State, the then-Oklahoma QB got an OU flag and also planted it at the Buckeyes logo at midfield.
Given the fierceness of the rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, this flag incident likely won't be the last time the two teams get chippy with one another.
