The Texas Longhorns kicked off the 2024 season with a statement win. They crushed Colorado State 52-0 in a performance that left fans, including Hollywood actor Glen Powell, buzzing with excitement.
Powell took to X and tweeted:
"Good lord, this is gonna be fun…"
It was a good outing for Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns despite a first-half interception. The 21-year-old set the tone early, guiding Texas to a comfortable lead and allowing the Longhorns to use their depth.
The defense was equally up to the task, allowing only 74 passing yards and 192 total yards, as they kept Jay Norvell's men off the scoreboard.
The game's highlight came in the third quarter when redshirt freshman Arch Manning stepped onto the field amidst loud cheer. Eli Manning’s nephew didn’t disappoint, completing five of six passes for 95 yards, including his first career touchdown to Silas Bolden.
With backup players getting valuable time on the field, Texas demonstrates why they’re national championship contenders this year. Steve Sarkisian’s men will be on the road for their Week 2 game against the Michigan Wolverines.
Michigan challenge awaits Steve Sarkisian' Texas
The Longhorns will be up for potentially their biggest test this season, that too in Week 2, as they prepare to face the defending national champions Michigan Wolverines at the Big House on September 7.
ESPN's College GameDay will also be held in Ann Arbor. It will pit the reigning Big 12 champions, now in the SEC, against a Michigan squad eager to defend its title under first-year head coach Sherrone Moore.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian knows his Longhorns must elevate their game to take down the Wolverines.
"We’ve got to play better than we did today," Sarkisian said after Rams win. "They’re the national champs, on the road. So, we’ve got to play good football."
While the Wolverines have lost important players from the roster who led their title-winning charge last season and head coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL, Michigan remains a force to be dealt with.
Sarkisian respects their ability to reload and develop top talent, understanding that Texas must be at its best to compete.
