Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders had an emotional beginning to their Valero Alamo Bowl showdown against the BYU Cougars. This game is the last time that Coach Prime's sons, Shedeur and Shilo, gear up for the Buffs as they will begin their professional journey in the NFL next year.
At the beginning of the Alamo Bowl showdown in Texas, Deion Sanders, who has a net worth of $45M (Celebrity Net Worth), walked his sons onto the field for one final time. After the 'final walk,' the Colorado head coach got emotional while speaking to ESPN and was seen fighting through tears in his eyes.
He also talked about his football journey with his sons throughout the years and how grateful he is to see them grow.
"The journey," Coach Prime said. "The journey. Been a tremendous tumultous journey.....I'm sorry this is tough. This is tough......I'm seeing when they first put on uniforms. You know, when they first started, when I first started coaching them. The good, the bad, the ups the downs, the journey. It's been a heck of a journey. And I'm thankful and appreciative and I thank God for it."
Deion Sanders and his sons arrived from Jackson State to Boulder last season. This year in the Big 12, he and his sons played a big role in helping Colorado put up a 9-3 campaign and qualify for the Bowl games for the first time since 2020.
Unfortunately, Deion Sanders and the Buffs could not end the season with a Bowl game victory. The BYU Cougars secured a 36-14 victory to take home the Alamo Bowl after dominating throughout the game.
Deion Sanders had high hopes of turning the tables in the second half against BYU
The first half of the Alamo Bowl saw the BYU Cougars take complete control of the game. They took a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a touchdown by LJ Martin and a 51-yard FG by Will Ferin.
The second quarter saw the Cougars extend their lead by another 10 points, putting Coach Prime's team in a tumultuous position. At the end of the first half, Deion Sanders highlighted a few problems the team had on the field and had high hopes of a comeback despite the deficit.
"Special teams, we've got to make some adjustments there as well," Coach Prime said. "But we've got to protect. He (Shedeur Sanders) is trying to do everything to move the ball. We're still on the runway. We're not here playing ball tonight, but we will. We're going to make necessary adjustments at halftime and come out looking like a new team."
Unfortunately, things did not work out according to Deion Sanders' plans. The BYU Cougars continued their offensive domination and put up 16 more points on the scoreboard in the second half. Shedeur Sanders managed to tally 208 yards and two touchdowns passing, but it was not enough to help the Buffs make a comeback.
Coach Prime is going to have a very different campaign next season with the absence of his sons and Travis Hunter. The Buffs already have a strong replacement for Shedeur at the QB position in the form of Julian Lewis. It will be interesting to see if he can help the team secure a playoff spot next year.
