Kalen DeBoer has entered an Alabama Crimson Tide program that is very much used to winning. Under previous head coach Nick Saban, Alabama won six national championships and nine SEC Championships.
This can easily be described as a winning culture, and coach DeBoer has committed to sticking to this culture, as it does work.
Former Alabama quarterback and college football analyst Greg McElroy has responded to these comments, saying:
"This is truth, 100%. He’s (Kalen DeBoer) talking about the guys really playing for each other. Coach Saban referenced this multiple times on the set. And this was something that was created for the last 17 years.
"When you’re at Alabama, or when you’re at Georgia, when you’re at Ohio State, when you’re playing for championships, the teams that win championships, they’re playing for their school."
While DeBoer talks about the culture that Saban created (and that he is building one), there are many players on this year's Alabama roster who do not have much sentiment toward the new system.
After Saban retired, a large number of Alabama players entered the transfer portal, with some of them wanting to transfer solely because Nick Saban was no longer involved with the program.
In fact, the Crimson Tide lost more than half of last year's roster, with only 44% of the team returning for another year in Tuscaloosa. Luckily for Kalen DeBoer, one of these players is star quarterback Jalen Milroe.
How will Kalen DeBoer get Jalen Milroe to succeed under him?
Kalen DeBoer spoke about how he plans to make the most out of Jalen Milroe this season. According to DeBoer, for Milroe to have a successful season, he needs to be around good people.
“[With] us all being in a room, we can make sure we’re really guiding and not have too many voices in Jalen’s ear. But also just making sure we’re making good decisions and continue to formulate a plan around him [and] also the other personnel that he has surrounding him.”
DeBoer has first-hand experience in creating a powerful quarterback. He did it with Michael Penix Jr. while at the Washington Huskies. But now he will face the biggest test of his career; carry forward the Saban legacy.
