Tom Herman’s time in charge of the Florida Atlantic football program has come to an end. The coach was fired Monday by the Owls with two games left in his second season.
Herman became Florida Atlantic's coach ahead of the 2023 college football season, replacing Willie Taggart. He was charged with the responsibility of returning the team to the level it was under Lane Kiffin. However, with a 6-16 record in two seasons, the coach has failed to get there.
With Herman out, here's a look at three options Florida Atlantic can consider for the position ahead of the 2024 season.
Top three replacements for Tom Herman at FAU
#1. Will Stein, Oregon offensive coordinator
Oregon has one of the most explosive offenses in college football. This is the work of Will Stein, who has been in Eugene with the Ducks since 2023.
Stein started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Louisville in 2013 and has gained experience across many programs over the years. He undoubtedly has the resume to replace Herman and help rebuild Owls football.
The Ducks averaged 531 yards per game in the 2023 season, the second-most in the FBS. They've remained one of the best offensive teams this season with 447.6 yards per game. This makes Stein a great option for Florida Atlantic.
#2, Shannon Dawson, Miami offensive coordinator
Dawson has risen to prominence in the college football landscape since last season. The coach was quick to establish his scheme at Miami, playing a crucial role in the Hurricanes’ rise.
Miami reigns supreme in total offense this season, boasting a staggering average of 544.8 yards per game, a testament to Dawson's pedigree. He was also the mastermind behind Houston's 2022 offense, which finished 17th nationally with 36.1 points per game.
#3, Jim Knowles, Ohio State defensive coordinator
Knowles has transformed Ohio State's defense into an elite unit since he arrived at the program in 2022. His experience and impact make him a good choice to replace Herman at Florida Atlantic.
The Buckeyes finished second in total defense in the FBS last season with an average of 265.4 yards per game. They also rank second in the landscape so far this season, conceding an average of 250.8 yards per game, showcasing the impact of Knowles on the unit.
