The OL coach of the Buckeyes, Justin Frye, had to face yet another defeat after top recruit David Sanders Jr. announced that he will take his talents to the Tennessee Volunteers despite visiting the Buckeyes several times. The news came as a shock to many Ohio State fans, who speculated if Sanders' commitment would affect Frye in any way.

Ohio State has not landed a five-star offensive line commitment since Donovan Jackson in 2021. In the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes, Ohio State's offensive line recruits have been ranked, on average, as the No. 330 in the country. The team missed out on several top-100 OLs in recent recruiting cycles, with none of the four five-star OLs they offered in 2023 even visiting Columbus.

Even though the program has landed numerous five-star talents for different positions, OL recruiting has lagged behind. This is something the fans have taken notice of, and therefore, they made light of the situation through these memes on X. Some fans were of the opinion that Justin Frye should get fired.

How does David Sanders Jr.'s Tennessee commitment affect Ohio State and Justin Frye?

Despite taking multiple visits to the Ohio State Buckeyes, Sanders' commitment to Tennessee brought a lot of shock to many fans. The Vols had been his top choice for the past year, and hence, he made the move. As mentioned earlier, his commitment was a significant loss for Justin Frye and Ohio State, as he would have been the highest-rated offensive line prospect for the Buckeyes since 2016.

The Buckeyes' recruiting pitch for offensive linemen has not had the same gravitas as their pitches for other positions like WR or CB. The team's approach has focused on the overall program culture, school, and coaching staff, instead of helping OL development and the NFL pipeline.

With Sanders' commitment to Tennessee. Ohio State's offensive tackle board will need to be restructured. The team has limited options at tackle to pair with the only 2025 OL, Carter Lowe. The offensive line recruiting for the 2026 class also appears to be off to a slow start, with limited offers and an in-state target, Will Conroy, already excluding the Buckeyes from his top choices.
