The Alabama Crimson Tide used to be a defensive juggernaut under retired coach Nick Saban as they romped their way to six national championship wins. This season, under new coach Kalen DeBoer, there have been a few standout games but several where the Bama defense allowed opponents too many points, including in losses to the Tennessee Volunteers and Vanderbilt Commodores.
During Week 9 of college football action on Saturday, the No. 15 Crimson Tide's defense once again showed a familiar stoutness that had been lacking so far in a 34-0 shutout against the No. 21 Missouri Tigers.

Alabama defense shows marked improvement
The Alabama shutout of the Missouri Tigers was the first time that the Crimson Tide had shut an opponent down in the SEC since 2020 when they did the same to the Mississippi State Bulldogs under former coach Nick Saban.
During his postgame news conference, under-fire captain and safety Malachi Moore revealed how the defense had changed since the losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee.
“We‘re honing in on the little things,” Moore said. “Watching everybody at practice. Make sure everybody is getting to the ball. No walking on the field. Shirts tucked in. Making sure if we do mess up, we’re reloading. Not leaving room for error.
“That’s the biggest thing we’ve got to continue as a team to hone in on. Continue to be hungry, but also playing the ’Bama way and continuing to be disciplined.”
Bama only allowed Missouri to convert 3 of 13 third-down attempts, a vast improvement from the games against Vanderbilt (12 of 18), South Carolina (7 of 15) and Tennessee (6 of 14).
During his postgame news conference, embattled Bama coach Kalen DeBoer was hesitant to declare the resurgence of the Crimson Tide's defense, but he credited their improved aggression.
“You’re only as good as your last play,” DeBoer said. “You’re only as good as your last game. There are things you know you do well. That’s something that is certainly, there’s some good vibes when it comes to taking the football away defensively.
“They’re hunting it. They’re anticipating a little bit. A little bit more attacking mindset. Not so much on their heels. Making every yard count.”
The importance of the Alabama Crimson Tide shutout was encapsulated when the Bama defense stopped the Missouri Tigers on fourth and goal from the one-yard line. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack even shared a chest bump with offensive coordinator Chris Kapilovic to celebrate the play.
