Playing defense on College Football 25 isn't easy. Whether it's backs cracking big plays or receivers getting open deep, there's always an offensive threat. But the defense doesn't have to be at a disadvantage. Here are seven strategies to help your defense play at a higher level.

1. Use the "guess pass"

To help get heat on a quarterback, on plays where it's pretty clear that a pass attempt is coming, activate the "guess pass" feature. His R1 (or RB, depending on console) before the snap and then push the right stick up. It'll help your defense get a little extra heat on the pass rush.

2. Use the conservative tackle

On the other side, don't play risky all the time, particularly in tackling. Those of us who remember the old EA games will rely too much on the hit stick or the dive.

Both of those were sound strategies then, but are more occasionally used now. The conservative tackle should be the defensive bread and butter. As in real football, making an offense be calculated and patient is a good strategy.

3. Feel free to shift linebackers

Defensive adjustments can be made by position group in College Football 25. For instance, hit the left stick input before the snap and up pops the possibility to shift linebackers or alter linebacker assignments.

These type of small adjustments will get more natural with more practice, but they can be key to shutting down offenses.

4. Play bend-but-don't-break

Depending on turnovers can be glamorous, but it's not the percentage play. Attune your defense more to containment and less to massive negative plays and turnovers.

It's a shift since the old EA days, when a good defense could shut out an offense and hold it to negative yards. It's tougher sledding now and a safer approach is justified.

5. Learn to use coverage shells

Coverage shells are a way to keep offenses off balance. Correctly using the shell means a defense will line up in one coverage, say cover 2, and shortly before the snap, it will shift to another coverage, say cover 3.

It's a good way to slow down smart offenses that are reading coverages and calling routes accordingly.

6. Remember wear and tear

There's always a temptation to ride your best players, but College Football 25 is aware of that possibility. That's part of the logic behind wear and tear.

If you leave your top 11 out there for most of the game, some of them will be worn down in the fourth quarter. Substitute often and keep an eye out for wear and tear issues.

7. Use a good defense

It's the easiest hint, because it's the one to start with. Use a good defense. Don't be surprised if Vanderbilt is getting torn apart in the SEC. Give Georgia a try or at least Missouri or Ole Miss. Learn with good defenses and get creative from there.
