"Trade the pick away": Browns Insider delivers unpopular opinion on Shedeur Sanders & Cam Ward ahead of NFL 2025 draft
Shedeur Sanders (L) | Cam Ward (R)

As the college football season comes near to closing, two standout quarterbacks have sparked debates leading up to the NFL draft: Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward.

Both players showcased promising talent in the 2024 season, but not everyone is convinced they are top-tier draft prospects. On Monday, Cleveland Browns insider Matthew Peterson expressed a divisive opinion about these two quarterbacks on his show.

"I'm going to say a very unpopular opinion right now," Peterson said. "I do not want the Browns to draft Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. I don't think either one is top-three draft-worthy. I mean, neither one in college showed me anything to believe that they are a no-doubt franchise quarterback. There is doubt.”

He continued, suggesting the Browns trade their potential top-two draft pick:

"And that for me is enough to go, if I'm the Browns, ideally they trade the pick away. That's what I would like Cleveland to do if they get a top-two draft pick. Trade it to a QB-desperate team like the Giants or like the Raiders. And that's not to say the Browns aren't QB needed themselves, but this is not the year to try and fix your quarterback problems."

2024 College football QB showdown: Shedeur Sanders vs. Cam Ward

Shedeur Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, has been a key player throughout the season. Under his leadership, Colorado achieved a 9-3 record, earning a spot in the Alamo Bowl against BYU. However, Sanders faced a tough outing in his final college game, a 36-14 loss.

Sanders completed 16 of 23 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against BYU. Sanders’ 2024 season stats include 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, with a QBR of 75.7.

Cam Ward, on the other hand, the Miami quarterback, led his team to a 10-2 record. Despite a 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, Ward displayed his skills by completing 12 of 19 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns in just one half of action.

Ward completed passing for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions, boasting a QBR of 88.8. Ward’s performance under pressure has been a highlight this season, completing 67.4% of his passes overall and 50.4% under duress.

Sanders’ poise and arm talent have made him a household name, but his struggles in critical moments raise questions about his consistency.

Meanwhile, Ward’s ability to improvise and make big plays is undeniable, though his risk-taking nature might give NFL teams pause.
