Despite Colorado losing during the weekend, Travis Hunter took his latest performance as an opportunity to promote himself for the Heisman Trophy. He reposted a story by a fan enumerating his stats for the 37–21 defeat to the Kansas Jayhawks. He captioned the post:
"ONE of ONE."
During the encounter, he recorded 125 receiving yards and had two touchdown catches. He played 46 offensive snaps and 79 defensive snaps. On defense, he had zero catches allowed and zero yards allowed.
However, despite these spectacular numbers, one has to question the timing of Hunter's blatant self-promotion. A victory this weekend would've put the Buffaloes in prime position to reach the Big 12 Championship Game. However, the loss means they're now tied with BYU, Iowa State and Arizona State with a conference record of 6-2.
There seem to be better moments to chase personal glory than after a defeat that might become key to the school's season.
Travis Hunter's stats in 2024
Overall Hunter has managed to record 1036 receiving yards, with 11 touchdown catches in 82 receptions this year. He's averaging a pretty good 12.6 yards per catch. He has already recorded over 300 yards and six touchdowns more than last year. He also has one rushing touchdown.
To that impressive offense performance, one has to add his defensive stats. As a cornerback, Hunter recorded 30 tackles (one less than last season), one pass defended, one forced fumble and three interceptions.
Because Hunter has become the first player to consistently play defense and offense while being one of the best players in the nation in both, he's the prime candidate to win the Heisman Trophy. At the moment, he's the favorite according to ESPN Bet (-800), Bet 365 (-600), Bet MGM (-1000) and Fan Duel (-700).
