Another week of college football has brought forth more Travis Hunter heroics. The Colorado Buffaloes star was his team's savior in their 38-31 overtime win against the Baylor Bears. Hunter made a big play in overtime forcing a fumble from Baylor running back Dominic Richardson as he attempted to tie the game in the last minute.
As usual, Hunter was active on both sides of the ball, registering 130 yards on seven receptions for his fifth consecutive 100-yard receiving game, the only Buffaloes player to ever achieve that stat line.
His 31-yard reception in the third quarter helped Colorado tie the game 24-24 and gave maverick quarterback Shedeur Sanders a platform to throw a desperation pass to LaJohntay Wester in the dying moments of the game to force overtime.
Hunter's Heisman odds stand at +3,500, making him No. 12 on the list of prospects, according to Fox Sports. The list is headed by the Miami Hurricanes' talented quarterback Cam Ward (+550) who has led the Hurricanes' resurgence.
Travis Hunter has registered 472 yards on 37 receptions resulting in five touchdowns this season.
Popular analyst backs Travis Hunter for Heisman
The Heisman Trophy has become the preserve of quarterbacks in modern college football with the last non-QB to win it being the Alabama Crimson Tide's DeVonta Smith in 2020.
Travis Hunter has made his way into conversations about college football's most coveted individual award due to his two-way status and the fact that he has excelled at both.
During an episode of the "Joel Klatt Show," popular analyst Joel Klatt tabbed Hunter for the Heisman due to his unique skillset on both sides of the ball.
Klatt said:
“Travis Hunter probably belongs in New York. I know it’s only three games, but if he continues this at all — like, at all, a percentage of what he’s doing — he belongs in New York.
“We’re getting to see something we’ve never seen in college football, at least in the modern era. We’ve seen some great players that can play both ways. Maybe they’ll roll out there, maybe return a punt here or there. Not a guy like this. Not a guy that is clearly a guy that could win the Biletnikoff Award and the Thorpe.”
The fact that Hunter continues to save the Colorado Buffaloes week in and week out makes his bid for the Heisman seem more miraculous.
