Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter has been the odds-on favorite for the coveted Heisman Trophy for the past few weeks due to his stellar performances for the Buffaloes. Against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, he reinforced that status with a stunning first-half interception that set the tone for the Buffs' eventual 52-0 win to finish the regular season in style on Friday.
Despite not receiving the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, which recognizes the best defensive back in the country, earlier in the week, Hunter put on a show at Folsom Field. He registered 116 yards on 10 receptions, resulting in three touchdowns, while adding one tackle, one interception and two pass breakups against the Cowboys.
According to FanDuel, oddsmakers have Hunter at -10,000 to win the Heisman, ahead of rival Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty (+3000).
Coach Prime campaigns for Travis Hunter to win Heisman
During the postgame news conference on Friday, Deion Sanders once again rooted for Travis Hunter to win the Heisman Trophy, making a passionate case to the assembled media:
"Travis Hunter proved today, and he has proved every week, that he is the best player in College Football. You've got to give me another definition of the award. The award is to go to who? The best quarterback? He's up for best offensive player, best defensive player, a plethora of things. Who else has done that? Ever?"
Fox Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho, during Wednesday's segment of FS1's "The Facility," laid the blame for Hunter's Jim Thorpe snub at the feet of Coach Prime. The Buffs' coach subtly addressed it during his postgame news conference:
“I think Travis clinched the Heisman with his performance. You’ve never seen it before. He’s the best player in college football. You could find ways to hate, to criticize, to condemn him and you won’t come out of that looking professional because now you’re just searching for something.
"Travis Hunter proved today, and he’s proved every week, that he’s the best player in college football.”
Hunter finished the regular season with 1,152 yards on 92 receptions, resulting in 14 touchdowns, while adding 31 tackles, one forced fumble and four interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.
