Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter was named the 90th Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday, accompanied by his mother, Ferrante Edmonds, whom he thanked emphatically in his acceptance speech. Hunter came down from the highs of his Heisman win by returning to training for the Buffs' Alamo Bowl clash against the BYU Cougars.
On Monday, Hunter's ever-supportive mother was still reminiscing about her son's stunning achievement with a heartwarming post on Instagram. She captioned it:
"So Proud of you @db3_tip. I Love you 😘 #heismantrophy2024 #TravisHunterJr," Edmonds wrote.
Travis Hunter commented on the post with a love heart emoji:
Emotional Travis Hunter dedicates Heisman to dad
During the Heisman ceremony in New York, Travis Hunter was accompanied by his mother, Ferrante Edmonds, his Colorado coach Deion Sanders, Buffs teammate, Shedeur Sanders, rapper Lil Wayne and his controversial fiancee, Leanna Lenee.
During his acceptance speech, the Heisman-winning star gave an emotional speech dedicating the trophy win to his father, who was not present at the ceremony.
"I want to say something to my father. He's not here and wasn't able to make it but I know you're watching on TV," Travis Hunter said. "Dad, I love you. For all the stuff you went through man ... Now look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man.
"All the times that you didn't get to see me, or the times you did come to see my games. From not seeing probably two games in high school to seeing me on TV every weekend and coming to see me. That means so much to me. I know you wanted to be here and you can't, but trust me, I got you. I'm bringing the trophy home. I love you."
In a Dec. 5 interview with the "Palm Beach Post," Travis Hunter Sr. revealed that he would not attend the Heisman ceremony despite being released three weeks early from the Palm Beach County West Detention Center in Belle Glade after a 90-day sentence related to an arrest in 2023.
He often attended Colorado games to watch his son but could not do so this year since he was in detention.
"I don't want to go," Hunter Sr. said. "I want to be there when he gets married and when he gets drafted. I'm going to watch this from home. I really don't feel no different because I always know he could win, if he put his mind to win. He's always had that … since he started playing football when he was 4 years old.
"At the end of the day, I would always tell him he's the best player anyway so he's got to go out there and play like it. Every time I'd tell him that he'd go out there and play like he's the best player in the world."
With Hunter Sr.'s promise to be present on draft night when Travis Hunter is expected to be a top-three pick according to ESPN, fans will finally be able to witness the father-son reunion.
