Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has become renowned for his divisive views on matters surrounding sports after retiring from the NFL. Before that, Newton won the 2010 Heisman Trophy in a landslide (729 out of 883 first-place votes) as a star for the Auburn Tigers during their national championship winning season.

Newton surprised many fans when he attended the 90th Heisman ceremony on Saturday after boycotting the event since 2010. In Monday's segment of his "4th and 1" podcast, he revealed why he attended and it involved the eventual winner, Travis Hunter, who was part of Newton's C1N Program as a youngster.

"The only reason I’m going back is because of one of the former players C1N program, Travis Hunter," Cam Newton said. "I've been a fan of all the former Heisman winners and finalists. It was just, it was bigger than that. And, my dad told me to go. So, I don't give a damn how big and bold—[when] Cecll Newton calls me, I answer.
“And my kids, they got so much excitement. I remember when we went to UCF they were like, 'Dad, we want to go see Travis Hunter.'"

Travis Hunter's mother Ferrante Edmonds thanked Cam Newton in the Instagram comment section of the post.

"Appreciate you @cam," Edmonds wrote.

Why Cam Newton boycotted Heisman ceremonies

The Heisman ceremony has been tinged by controversial incidents including Reggie Bush being stripped of his 2005 win in 2010 for receiving improper benefits during his playing days for the USC Trojans. The Heisman Committee voted to reinstate Bush's award in April this year after the NIL era made its stamp in college sports.

In 2010, Cam Newton was one of the most sought-after players when he sought to transfer from Blinn College whom he had played for in 2009 after leaving Urban Meyer's infamous Florida Gators the previous year.

According to Mississippi State Bulldogs boosters, Cecil Newton, the quarterback's father solicited between $120,000- $1800,000 to secure his son's commitment which was fobridden by the NCAA.

He was suspended by the Auburn Tigers before he was reinstated a week before the Heisman ceremony. In a March segment of his "4th and 1' podcast, the outspoken Cam Newton revealed why he had not attended a Heisman ceremony since winning in 2010.

“I haven’t been to a Heisman event since I left,” Cam Newton said, “and it’s because they told my dad he couldn’t come to the ceremony. The biggest moment of my life, the most influential person of my life can’t share the biggest time of my life.
“Going back to that time, you have to be reminded, the NCAA was doing a thorough investigation. ‘Mr. Newton, it’s best if you don’t.’ And my dad is similar to me. Any extracurricular distractions, I don’t want. ‘Son, I’ll be in the hotel room.’"

Newton continued:

"And I just remember like after I won the Heisman, I just kept looking at my mom, and she knew. She was like, ‘Yeah, baby, let’s go to the room.’ I’m that person that my dad is such a strong figure in my life. He sacrificed a lot just so I could play."

Cam Newton broke a 14-year Heisman ceremony drought due to his close ties with Travis Hunter and all seems well in the lofty Heisman world after the Reggie Bush controversy was also put to bed once and for all.
