The Texas Tech Red Raiders, led by coach Joey McGuire, lost 39-26 in the Liberty Bowl to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Dec. 27. There was good news, though, on the transfer portal front. The Red Raiders' portal class ranked No. 1 in the country by On3 with the window closing on Dec. 28.
On Saturday, Colorado coach Deion Sanders' eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., hailed McGuire's pre-season prediction about the Red Raiders' transfer portal success on his Instagram stories.
He captioned the story:
"Coach McGuire told me before the game that this was going to happen, and it's literally happening. Turn up coach," Deion Sanders Jr. wrote.
Joey McGuire faces dilemma after transfer portal moves
Joey McGuire's transfer portal strategy could have consequences with the House vs. NCAA settlement set to cap roster sizes at 105 from next season. This might lead to a few players losing their spots on the Texas Tech Red Raiders team.
During his weekly news conference before the Liberty Bowl, McGuire spoke about that aspect of Texas Tech's transfer portal moves.
"And then there are some guys that are trying to decide — they have a year left — that are trying to decide, are they going to play another year, older guys," McGuire said. "They are guys that graduate in the spring, they want to graduate as a Red Raider, and so they want to take their chance of making the 105."
According to a report by the "Lubbock Avalanche-Journal," 25 Texas Tech walk-on players are in danger of being pushed out by the Red Raiders' success in the transfer portal.
McGuire further revealed that he has already addressed the makeup of his roster while at the same time pinpointing his satisfaction with the moves made by the Red Raiders.
"I don't think whenever it comes to the 105," McGuire said, "that anybody doesn't feel like they've had a great conversation with me to (know) exactly where they're at and what they have to do to be in the 105. Again, we try to be really upfront and transparent with them and let them make a decision.
"I feel like we'll be in a really good spot. We'll have addressed our needs and wants, and then we'll take a deep breath and kind of evaluate the roster, of where we're at."
Despite the challenges that will inevitably come with signing more players from the transfer portal, Joey McGuire has recruited admirably from the transfer portal.
