Mike Bloomgren has been fired from his role as coach of the Rice Owls. Bloomgren had been in charge of the program for seven seasons, but yesterday's defeat to the UConn Huskies was his final game as the Owls coach.
ESPN's Pete Thamel broke the news by posting:
"Sources: Rice has fired coach Mike Bloomgren, with the Owls at 2-6 this year. Bloomgren is 24-52 in seven years at Rice. He led the Owls to consecutive bowl games in 2022 and 2023, the later of which came after the transition to the AAC."
Here is how college football fans reacted to this news.
These fans have mentioned the loss to the Huskies as a factor in the decision to remove Bloomgren from his role.
"UConn broke them 🤣🤣🤣🤣" said this fan.
"damn, good job uconn," said another fan.
These fans are surprised that Rice has a football team, and have shown their lack of faith in a program that has mostly underwhelmed.
"Smart dudes but can't win games smh," said this fan.
"C'mon it's @RiceFootball. Nobody expects them to win. Every single victory is literally an upset," said another fan.
"RICE HAS A FOOTBALL TEAM?" Asked a third fan.
This fan is surprised that while Mike Bloomgren has been fired, some others have not.
"How Trent Dilfer and Ryan Walters still have jobs," said the fan.
Mike Bloomgren at Rice
During his seven years in charge of the program at Rice, Mike Bloomgren was able to savor some success in the role.
The Owls have never been a challenger for the Conference USA, and then the AAC championship. But in the last two years, they have been able to make a bowl game. However, they were unsuccessful in both attempts.
In the end, Bloomgren had an overall record of 24-52 with the Owls and was fired with the team at 2-6 for the season.
Who will replace Mike Bloomgren?
Mike Bloomgren will be replaced by his assistant coach, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
"Associate HC Pete Alamar has accepted the interim head coaching job, per ESPN sources. Rice has four games remaining, including Navy at home this weekend and at Memphis next week. He’s owed nearly $900,0000."
Pete Alamar will inherit a team that is struggling this season, and his first two games will be tough, facing the previously-ranked Navy before playing Memphis. The Tigers are in the hunt for a spot in the AAC championship game.
