UNLV vs Utah State: Preview
UNLV is a massive 19-point favorite while the over/under is set at 66 points.
UNLV is coming off an OT loss to Syracuse in a back-and-forth affair. The Rebels were led by quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams who threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns as he has been solid since Matthew Sluka left the program.
"It was business as usual," head coach Barry Odom said afterward about Williams taking over, via FootballScoop. "We've got a very mature team. We went to work on Monday and had a great Monday practice. I thought our Tuesday practice was the best we've had all year;
"I thought our Wednesday was even better than that and I thought our Thursday was as well. We've got strong leadership, (the players) understand the mission that we're on, and they got it done. I follow their lead a lot. Credit to our leadership."
UNLV has also been led by Ricky White III recording 388 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, Jalen Catalon has four picks, Jackson Woodard has three sacks and 45 tackles.
Despite the last loss to Syracuse, Odom has confidence the OT loss will help ignite the roster.
“We’ve got a tough team,” Odom said, via Talkthatradio. “We’re close as a team but this will draw us closer, I have no doubt about that. We’ve got to learn from the good, we’ve got to learn from the bad then we have to go apply it. If not, then you haven’t learned from your lessons. We’ll be on a mission to get that done.”
Utah State, meanwhile, has struggled mightily this season. The Aggies are coming off a blowout loss to Boise State. Utah State has lost four straight games.
The Aggies have been led by running back Rahsul Faison, who has rushed for 504 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Royals has 491 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
On defense for Utah State, Jordan Vincent leads the way with 46 tackles, while as a team the Aggies have just six sacks and three interceptions.
Utah State has struggled on both sides of the ball and this is a great spot for UNLV to return to the win column in a big way. Hajj-Malik Williams is the real deal and the dual-threat quarterback should be able to carve up the Aggies defense with his arm and legs.
Utah State, meanwhile, will struggle to score against UNLV as the Aggies' defense makes too many mistakes and likely will turn the ball over a couple of times.
Prediction: UNLV 41, Utah State 17
