The first round of the College Football Playoff wasn't as exciting as many would've liked, and Urban Meyer thinks that's OK. All of the favorites for the first round of the CFP – Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas and Ohio State – easily won their encounters.
This has brought some criticism to the selection committee for picking teams like SMU or Indiana for the playoff. There had been much anticipation regarding the playoff expansion this year. However, according to Meyer, not that many upsets can be expected.
"A lot of people, when this play of the word 'playoffs' started, and 12 teams are trying to have the imagination of March Madness," Meyer said on "The Triple Option" podcast on Monday.
"The reality is, the chance of upset in the game of college football happen, but not to the extreme that happen in March Madness. So, I think we are now being presented with that. Time will tell if that will happen.
"But every year in March Madness, you get a couple upsets. ... I'm just wondering, is the college football fan ready for first-round blowouts every year? Once again, it's Year 1. We don't need to jump the gun here"
Urban Meyer believes the College Football Playoff will have to pivot toward strength of schedule as a selection measure
Urban Meyer also shared some thoughts on how he believes the weekend's results will affect future playoff selections and the way teams arrange their schedules.
"I think the reality is that there’s two things that I witnessed,” Meyer said. “No. 1 is the College Football Playoff, I think, is forever changed now. And that means, if you don’t play anyone, you’re not going to get in. I think that’s been — if you don’t beat a ranked team or … I think the public spoke.
"I kind of paid attention the best I could, and I think that you’ll take a team that plays a rugged schedule over a team that just doesn’t play anyone. That was the feedback I got.
“I think if you don’t play someone and you’re a lesser team, you won’t get in. The second is, and I think we’ve discussed this before, why would you ever play a tough team in the opening game? Why would you do that?
"You look at Tennessee. Tennessee had one of those ridiculous preseason schedules. They did play NC State, but they played UTEP, Chattanooga and Kent State. So, college football fans, get ready for some 50-7 games in the preseason.”
Meyer also pointed out the irony that the world of college football has attempted three systems – the BCS, four-team CFP and 12-team CFP – and expanding the number of teams hasn't made the system any more fair.
