Before June 4th, USC had just three verbal commits in the 2024 class. After June 5th, Southern Cal had eight verbal commitments in the 2024 class.
Oh, the difference 48 hours can make. Before the 5th, Southern Cal was ranked 54th in recruiting in the entire nation. Undoubtedly, head coach Lincoln Riley was getting whispers of criticism in his first full cycle of recruiting.
Then Southern Cal had a magical run of commitments, making Trojans fans go crazy on social media.
Riley won't have to answer those questions anytime soon. USC suddenly leaped to 19th in the national recruiting rankings, according to 247 Sports, by getting five verbal commitments in the span of two days.
USC was already in the top 10 transfer portal rankings, something they did to great effect last season [Caleb Williams]. The result was a PAC-12 championship berth and a much-needed rebirth for the USC football program.
The Trojans got help at every level of the program this week. From the offensive line, the defensive line and into the secondary.
Let's take a longer look at a few of the four-star commits joining the Trojans in 2024:
#1 Dakota Fields, Cornerback, Junipero Serra
Dakota Fields is the 10th-ranked corner in the nation, as well as the 10th-rated prospect out of California. As always, it’s important USC wins its home state battles. Doing so has become more national, and harder, so it is good to see Fields stay home and become a Trojan.
At 6-foot-2, Fields is a long-rangy cover corner. As a physical tackler, he will bring future “grittiness” to the USC secondary.
#2 Kameryn Fountain, DE, Booker T. Washington
The Atlanta, Georgia native is every bit the 6-foot-4 240 pounds he is billed as.
A two-sport athlete, Fountain grabbed boards and sacked QBs at Booker T Washington High School. The four-star defensive end has a natural bend that could help him get on the field early in ‘24.
#3 Manasee Itete and Hayden Treter, OL
The offensive line is the heart of a football team, and USC’s just got bigger and beefier. Both Itete and Treter weigh in the 300s.
Itete, the four-star tackle, has the athleticism to play both ways in high school. At 6-foot-5, he is a mountain of a man.
Hayden Treter is someone the Trojans hope to be a recruiting diamond in the rough. A Top-10 prospect in Colorado, Treter committed after his official visit on June 1st. Notably, Treter is a three-star prospect.
#4 Jarvis Boatwright, Safety, Clearwater
Boatwright is the final of the five prospects that committed during the Trojan’s epic two-day run.
The four-star from Clearwater, Florida is another two-way player. Boatwright is just the type of hard-hitting safety the Trojans desperately needs.
However, Boatwright has to stay healthy to make an impact and that is something he has struggled with before. He played in just four games as a junior before sustaining a season-ending knee injury.
It will be interesting to see how the USC roster develops in the future.
