USC Trojans quarterback Miller Moss spent two seasons as Caleb Williams' backup. The 2022 Heisman winner then departed to play for the Chicago Bears in this year's NFL draft. This opens up the window of opportunity for Moss to prove his worth as Williams' successor on the field for Lincoln Riley's team.
During an appearance on "Next Up with Adam Breneman," Miller Moss spilled the bean on why he didn't transfer from USC in search of better opportunities:
"There were a bunch of factors when it comes to that decision to stay. I think probably the biggest one being my appreciation for this place and this university and I think maybe some of the emotional attachment I had as a kid growing up being a fan of this place.
"Cause you know there was no pro football team in LA. ... I think my attachment to this place and the relationship I had with coach Riley." [Time stamp - 1:30]
Moss joined the Trojans as a redshirt freshman in 2021. He talked about how he found comfort in being able to learn from a quarterback like Caleb Williams:
"If you're gonna sit behind someone, you might as well sit behind the Heisman trophy winner number one pick. You know what I mean, so that gave me a little comfort in doing so."
Can Miller Moss replicate Caleb Williams' success at USC?
Lincoln Riley has not officially named the next starting quarterback for the USC Trojans. But Miller Moss has made a good case for himself and is said to be the front-runner for the role.
Last season, when Williams opted out of the 2023 Bowl Game, Moss gave fans a glimpse of his talents and what they can expect from him. He tallied 372 passing yards and six touchdown passes, helping USC emerge victorious against the Louisville Cardinals.
With USC gearing up for their Big Ten debut, it will be interesting to see if Miller Moss will lead the Trojans to emerge as a national championship contender in the new 12-team playoff format.
