Utah QB Cam Rising maintains rivalry spirits; aims to "whoop BYU's a**" in 2024 season

Utah Utes quarterback Cam Rising is gearing up for his seventh collegiate campaign. His journey has not been easy, fighting through several injuries. Following a severe knee injury, he received a medical redshirt for the 2023 season. The 25-year-old is set to make a comeback on the gridiron for his team.

Cam Rising attended Utah Utes' Big 12 Media Days. He was questioned about his opinion on the program's upcoming game against rivals the BYU Cougars. Following the conference realignment, Utah left the Pac-12 to join the Big 12, setting up an in-conference rivalry game in 2024.

The Utah quarterback had an optimistic take on the question while keeping the spirit of the rivalry alive. Rising stated that he is looking forward to trashing the BYU Cougars when they clash with each other in Week 11 of the 2024 season.

"Absolutely. I just wanna, wanna go down their and whoop their a** pretty much. That's all I'm focusing on," Rising said.

The Utes and the Cougars last faced off in the Holy War rivalry game back in 2021. While Cam Rising was still a part of the team back then, he served as the backup to then-starting quarterback Charlie Brewer for that game.

They succumbed to a 17-26 defeat at the hands of the Cougars, bringing an end to their nine-game winning streak. Cam Rising replaced Brewer following that game and turned the fortunes of the program, leading them to a Pac-12 title. He recorded 2,493 passing yards and 20 TD passes for the 2021 season.

Cam Rising succumbed to a severe injury during the 2023 Rose Bowl game against Penn State. He tore his ACL, MCL, MPLF, and meniscus. This led to him receiving a medical redshirt for the program's final campaign in the Pac-12 where they finished with an 8-5 overall record.

At the Big 12 Media Days, head coach Kyle Whittingham updated Utah's quarterback depth chart for their debut Big 12 season. He revealed that Rising will take on the role of the starting quarterback on the team.

"If we keep him upright, we'll do OK," Kyle Whittingham said.

It will be interesting to see how Cam Rising performs after rehabilitating from his injury. Can he help the Utes be a contender in the new 12-team playoff format?
