Urban Meyer had a long career as a college football head coach, and a brief career as an NFL head coach. He is most famous for coaching the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012 to 2018. While with the Buckeyes, his team never lost to its rival the Michigan Wolverines. They competed every year and always came out on top, even when the Wolverines were favored.
However, since Ryan Day became the Buckeyes' head coach, the team has only beaten Michigan once in five games. It has lost the last four meetings between the two clubs, including the regular-season finale this year, 13-10. That was the most unacceptable loss since Ohio State was the No. 2 team in the country at the time, while Michigan was unranked.
Meyer appeared on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on Tuesday. Cowherd asked Meyer if Michigan is in the Buckeyes' head a little bit.
"Oh it's very fair, obviously it's happened the last four years after a dominant run and it's got to get changed," Meyer said (starts at 0:45). "I hear people say that there's too much emphasis on the game. I grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio, so that's the way it is in Ohio State.
"It'll never change, so when someone says, "they need to back off that game," I'm like, they don't need to back off that game, they just got to win that game."
Urban Meyer speaks about Ohio State's rematch with Oregon in the second round of the CFP
Although Ohio State lost to Michigan in the regular season finale, they won their first-round matchup 38-15 over No. 8-ranked Indiana, earning themselves a spot in the Rose Bowl against No. 1-ranked Oregon. The game will take place on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET. Colin Cowherd and Urban Meyer discussed the game.
The discussion began with Cowherd pointing out that while Oregon is undefeated, its defense has been an issue this season. He discussed that while he thinks the Ducks are a great team, he has more faith in the defense of the Buckeyes, Fighting Irish, Longhorns and Nittany Lions.
However, despite his history with the Buckeyes, Urban Meyer defended Oregon's defense, saying the line is excellent and putting pressure on the quarterback. So, he is expecting a tight matchup between these teams on Wednesday.
