Washington State needed a fourth quarter rally to hold off San Diego State, 29-26.
Washington State (7-1) was looking to keep rolling against a dangerous San Diego State squad in late action on Saturday. The Cougars had been hot and their quality performance was noted in being credited as a 17.5 point road favorite.
Washington State came in scoring just under 40 points point game with high-octane QB John Mateer. The Cougars' only loss has been to mighty Boise State.
San Diego State's 3-4 season has been as up and down as it sounds. Their last three games had been decided by a total of seven points. With two straight wins, freshman QB Danny O'Neil had taken the team by the reins. The Aztecs held a two-score advantage early in the fourth quarter, but could not grab the victory.

Despite the perceived gap between the teams, this matchup was competitive throughout. WSU scored on the opening drive, but then saw SDSU narrow the gap, first to a point late in the first quarter and then to two points at the half.
SDSU made its move early in the second half, first taking the lead midway through the third quarter on a 27 yard scoring pass to Nate Bennett.
But Washington State thundered back, hitting a quick scoring pass to Carlos Hernandez and then taking the lead on a Mateer run with just over five minutes to play.
Washington State has a week off next week and could reasonably finish 11-1. San Diego State falls to 3-4 and will next take on Boise State on the road. They also have to travel to UNLV, so a path to bowl eligibility is a bit shaky.
