The Texas Tech Red Raiders, under coach Joey McGuire, saw their slim hopes of making the Big 12 Conference championship game evaporate after a 41-27 loss to the Colorado Buffaloes in Week 11 of college football action.
Despite taking a 13-0 lead in the game, the Red Raiders were swept away by the combined brilliance of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the Heisman-contending Travis Hunter.
During the game, Red Raiders fans took part in a ritual that goes back to 1989 when they started throwing tortillas on the field during games. The fans threw tortillas on the field after a controversial referee's call that favored the Buffaloes.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire was not pleased by the conduct of his fans and he took over the microphone in the Jones AT&T Stadium and yelled at the home fans, asking them to stop throwing trash on the field.
The tortillas came raining down again in the third quarter when Hunter scored a 24-yard touchdown and did a cheeky jog in front of the Texas Tech fans.
Deion Sanders joked about the tradition during his weekly news conference.
“I heard they throw tacos …” Deion Sanders said. “Is that legal to throw tortillas? We’re going to try to make them empty those things. We’re going to try to make them empty them.”
Joey McGuire shares special bond with Coach Prime
During his weekly news conference, Sanders lavished praise on Joey McGuire revealing their shared history after his son, Deion Sanders Jr. played for the Texas Tech coach when he coached Cedar Hill High School, Texas.
“He (Joey McGuire) was dominant, won state titles, well-respected in the community, well-respected among his peers. He was always upstanding and forthright,” Coach Prime said.
"And I consider him a true friend and someone I could call and lean on to understand how this college thing works at some time. Because I’m still new to this, although I’m true to this — I still need him and various coaches at times to lean on. But I’m sure he’s going to have those young men ready and I can’t wait to see him and hug his neck.”
Joey McGuire has already led the Red Raiders to bowl eligibility much like his friend, Deion Sanders has done with the Buffaloes and will aim to finish the season on a positive note in the remaining games against the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the West Virginia Mountaineers.
