WATCH: App State pulls off Hail Mary in second quarter to score first touchdown of Week 4 game against South Alabama

App State was already in a tough position in the first half of the game against the South Alabama Jaguars. The away team was leading 28-0 heading into the second half, making a comeback for Shawn Clark's team almost impossible.

In the second quarter of the App State vs. South Alabama showdown, the Mountaineers finally found themselves on the scoreboard. With a few seconds on the clock before the end of the first half, App State quarterback Joey Aguilar threw a 47-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Dalton Stroman.

This helped the Mountaineers regain a bit of confidence before the second half of the game commenced.

Unfortunately, the damage was already done by the South Alabama Jaguars. Redshirt freshman QB Gio Lopez led the Jaguars' offense effectively on the field. He recorded 154 passing yards with two touchdowns while rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown to give his team a 48-14 away victory.

The Mountaineers were considered to be the favorites heading into the game against South Alabama. They are also considered to be a top contender for the Sun Belt championship. However, App State's 2024 campaign finds itself in turmoil, as they are now 2-2 in the season so far in four games.

Last season, Clark led the Mountaineers to a Sun Belt showdown against Troy. Unfortunately, they lost the conference championship but finished the season with a 9-5 overall campaign and a Cure Bowl victory against the Miami RedHawks.

Who will App State face next?

After this Week 4 loss to South Alabama, the Mountaineers will next take on the Liberty Flames at home. Liberty will be playing against East Carolina in Week 4 before going against Clark's team.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Liberty Flames game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Kidd Brewer Stadium. The game is expected to kick off at around 3:30 pm ET.

If the Liberty Flames manage to defeat East Carolina, then they will enter the game against Appalachian State with a four-game winning streak. It will be interesting to see if Clark's Mountaineers can find redemption at home following the disappointing loss to South Alabama.
